I've received several messages from friends and peers lately about how I "MUST create a fashion blog" with such enthusiasm and assurance, I was finally motivated to do so, so thank you!
To start, I had a recent inquiry about how I went from red hair (though I am naturally a brunette) to practically platinum hair.
I am going to make this as simple as possible. Be warned, going blonde is a HUGE PROCESS, so if you lack patience, this is probably not the colour for you. It is going to take some work, but I think it is completely worth it!
First, you will need the following tools:
all of items listed here and further below are available at Sally's
- a plastic bowl ($2.39)
- gloves ($2.99)
- tint brush ($1.29)
Now to begin...
note: if your hair has been previously dyed, start with this step, if you have never coloured your hair, move on to the second step.
Step one: purchase Color Brilliance Color Corrector ($8.99), and make sure to buy a Volume 10 developer ($4.49) to go with it. 20 may also be used. This will strip your hair of the colour without causing immense damage -- in fact, it's quite gentle, and will make a huge difference in the colouring process. *I apologise for the repugnant odor in advance. OPEN A WINDOW!
Step two: use Clairol 7th Stage Creme Hair Lightener ($4.89) -- I have tried several bleaches in my lifetime, and this one is by far the best in diminishing unwanted colour(s), and is not too harsh. You will need a 20 or 30 volume developer, but beware: the higher the volume, the more damaging it will be. You will also need to add Clairol's Lightening Activators (you may use up to three) to the creme lightener & developer of your choice. These are somewhat easy to miss, but they can be found in small white packages and are also available at Sally's for $1.59.
Step three: If you have not reached your ideal blonde quite yet, repeat Step two after a MINIMUM of two weeks.
Step four: depending upon what shade you are going for, as I said, I chose platinum blonde, you will need to use a toner to rid of the brassy/orangey or yellow shades in your hair. I would suggest White Lady (t18) by Wella (around $5), using a 10 or 20 developer.
Step five: Invest in some "purple shampoo" or conditioner. I use Clairol Shimmer Lights ($8.49) and it is possibly the best 8 dollars I have ever spent! (Thanks, Liz!) I leave it in my hair whilst showering (usually 10-15 minutes) and it really eliminates the unwanted yellow and orange hues in my hair.
Finally, take extra care of your hair during this time. Using a deep conditioner every few days is highly recommended.
I hope that was easy and clear enough! If there are any questions or perplexities, feel free to message me.

This was my hair prior to bleaching, and now:
Some parts are more an ash blonde, but I'm content with it for now. Not bad for around $30, eh?

I love this, Roxanne! Excellent post! You are so thorough. If ever I dye my hair blonde, this will be my guide! <3<3<3<3<3
